Swiss universities receive basic financing from the government and cantons, yet, most research depends on third-party funding. Some of the third-party funds are project- and programme-specific and granted in a competitive process by public authorities, such as the SNSF and the EU. The remainder are private funds, raised by foundations or through commissioned research or provision of services by the private sector.
Successfully raising third party funding, especially from the public sector, is a good indicator for young researchers that they are working on a competitive and winning project. It proves academic independence and might prepare the path for bigger project proposals with peers and senior researchers.
Junior researchers just about to complete their dissertation, or who have recently done so, will find relevant career funding opportunities offered by the SNSF, the EU and the HSG (see links to the right “Career” and “Funding Finder” under “Downloads”). Before submitting an application, you should carefully consider your objectives. For some it might be useful to plan a longer-term relocation; for others, to stay at your home institute or a combination of short visits at different institutions.
Be aware that certain funding instruments are not awarded on a regular base. The process itself may also take several months.
Whether you are experienced in submitting applications or not, we recommend to get in touch and seek advice regarding strategic matters and acutal application from the relevant agencies or institutions.
